The United Football League will leave Birmingham and Houston as part of a major market realignment ahead of the 2027 season. Both cities will be replaced by new markets that have not yet been announced.
The UFL described the decision as part of its effort to create a sustainable spring football league built around suitable stadiums, strong local support and improved game-day experiences. The league also confirmed that it plans to grow to 10 teams in 2028, including a previously announced Oklahoma City franchise.
A 12-team UFL remains the long-term goal. The league initially targeted 2030 for reaching that number but said expansion could be accelerated to 2029 because of interest from prospective markets.
The departures will also reshape UFL betting markets. Birmingham has traditionally been one of the most recognizable teams on championship futures boards, while Houston has generally carried longer odds. Bettors will now need to wait and see which franchises replace them, how existing rosters are distributed, and when sportsbooks begin offering odds on the new teams.
Birmingham Leaves Despite Championship History
The loss of the Birmingham Stallions is particularly notable because the franchise has been the most successful team of the modern spring football era.
Birmingham won the USFL championship in 2022 and 2023 before capturing the inaugural UFL Championship in 2024. The Stallions defeated the San Antonio Brahmas 25-0 in that title game, completing a three-season championship run under head coach Skip Holtz.
That success regularly made Birmingham one of the favorites at UFL betting sites. The Stallions opened at approximately +300 to win the 2026 championship, giving them an implied probability of 25%. Houston, by comparison, entered the season as a +1200 long shot.
However, the Stallions finished the 2026 regular season at 4-6 and missed the playoffs. Houston also went 4-6, leaving both teams tied near the bottom of the standings despite their dramatically different recent histories.
UFL co-owner Mike Repole said Birmingham’s departure was entirely related to the size of Protective Stadium. Approximately 16,000 fans attended the Stallions’ opening game, but Repole argued that the atmosphere was diminished inside a venue that was too large for the league’s needs.
The UFL remains open to returning to Birmingham if a more appropriately sized stadium becomes available.
Houston Could Not Establish Consistency
Houston’s removal followed several attempts to establish a consistent identity in the market.
The franchise played under the Roughnecks and Gamblers names while also changing venues and operating under different versions of spring football. Repole acknowledged that those changes made it difficult for Houston to develop lasting momentum.
Houston moved into Shell Energy Stadium and revived the Gamblers name for the 2026 season, but the changes did not produce the turnaround the league wanted. UFL leadership nevertheless praised Houston as a strong sports city and thanked the stadium, fans and local partners for supporting the team.
How Will The Changes Affect UFL Betting?
The UFL bet type that will suffer the most immediate impact will be the championship futures. Birmingham will no longer occupy its familiar position near the top of the odds board, while Houston’s replacement could take over as one of the league’s early long shots.
Roster movement may have an even greater effect. If players and coaches from the Stallions and Gamblers are transferred to the new franchises, sportsbooks will need to evaluate whether those teams should be treated as established contenders or true expansion clubs.
Bettors should also pay attention to where the new teams play. The league is clearly prioritizing appropriately sized venues and passionate local crowds, factors that could eventually influence home-field advantage, point spreads and live betting markets.
The next major announcement will reveal which cities replace Birmingham and Houston. Once those locations, coaching staffs and rosters are confirmed, UFL sportsbooks should have a much clearer foundation for setting the first 2027 championship odds.
