XFL Team FAQ's
The XFL season began on Saturday, February 8th, the weekend after Super Bowl 54. Until further notice, the XFL season will begin the weekend following the conclusion of the NFL season.
Currently, there are eight teams in the XFL. There is a ninth team that does not compete and serves as a practice squad that the main eight teams can draw talent from in the event they are down a player.
After the XFL’s first season in 2001, many players went on to achieve success in the NFL The Los Angeles Xtreme’s Tommy Maddox went on to start for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Rod “He Hate Me” Smart went on to play running back for the Philadelphia Eagles, Carolina Panthers, and Oakland Raiders.
The season is ten weeks long. Each team in the XFL will play the teams in their division twice and will play the teams in the opposing division once. The playoffs last for two weeks, a conference championship week, and the XFL championship game.
Yes, all XFL games will be televised. Games will be on either FOX, ABC, ESPN, or Fox Sports 1.
No. There are no bye weeks. The XFL is interested in expediting the game, so perhaps this is part of that strategy.
For weeks 1 through 5, the maximum roster size for an XFL team is 52 players. After week 5, the players on Team 9 will be disbursed to all teams throughout the league, and the roster size maximum will increase by 4 to 57 players.
The ninth team is a team of 40 players that are coached and organized like a regular XFL team but do not compete in any games. The purpose of the ninth team is to provide a supply of players for the rest of the teams to pull from if they find themselves needing to fill a roster spot. After week 5 of the XFL season, all players of team nine will be disbursed to the 8 XFL teams, and a new team of 36 players will be recruited and will form a new team nine. There are no special teams specialists included on team nine.
Owner Vince McMahon has expressed interest in bringing in additional teams to the league, including the possibility of a second Dallas based team, but there are no plans of an additional team at the moment.
The season is still early, but there have been great early performances by the following players:
Austin Proehl – WR – Seattle Dragons
PJ Walker – QB – Houston Roughnecks
Eli Rogers – WR – DC Defenders
Nelson Spruce – WR – Los Angeles Wildcats
Daniel Williams – WR – Tampa Bay Vipers
Matt Jones – RB – St. Louis BattleHawks
The XFL championship game will be played on Sunday, April 26 at 3 PM
