Following the announcement of three new UFL teams set to launch in 2026, co-owner Mike Repole shared bold insights into the league’s future, and he didn’t hold back. In a series of interviews, Repole outlined a long-term vision that includes:
- A regional player rights system designed to connect local college stars with nearby UFL teams
- A 16-team league goal by the mid-2030s
- A candid take on player longevity: “If you’re still in the UFL after five years, maybe it’s time to find a new career”
- A comparison between building the UFL and his billion-dollar brand journeys with Vitamin Water and BodyArmor
Regional Roots, Local Stars
Repole emphasized the importance of fan connection through familiarity. The proposed regional player rights rule would give UFL teams priority access to players from colleges within a defined radius. For example, the Columbus Aviators, one of the new franchises, would have first dibs on former Ohio State players and other local talent.
“It’s almost like everyone is a free agent in our league… Having fans familiar with players who were stars at Ohio State but didn’t make the NFL, that’s going to be a big part of our strategy.”
While the system isn’t finalized, Repole expects more clarity by December or January. The goal is to create instant name recognition and deepen fan loyalty by keeping college favorites close to home.
Building a League Like a Brand
Repole likened the UFL’s growth strategy to his past ventures, noting that just as it took a decade to build Vitamin Water and BodyArmor into household names, the UFL will require patience, vision, and brilliant execution.
As the league eyes expansion and deeper community ties, the regional rights system could become a cornerstone of its identity, bridging the gap between college stardom and professional opportunity.
Is There Still An XFL division?
No, for the 2026 season, the UFL has done away with divisions. As the league has only eight teams, the new vision did not support two separate divisions. However, the league might return to the divisional format in the future as more teams are added.
However, the UFL Playoffs format will remain the same, with four teams automatically qualifying for the postseason. The main difference is that there will be no divisional championship games.
Is It Legal To Bet On The UFL?
Yes, XFL betting sites are still available; however, they now operate under the UFL moniker. In the USA, bettors have access to online sportsbooks operating from outside of the states. Only a handful of states currently offer online sports betting, making offshore sites the predominant source of wagering on spring football.
