Panthers Future May Rely On Soccer Club’s New Stadium Plans

UFL logoThe United Football League (UFL) could find its Detroit future intertwined with a local soccer organization. Leaders from Detroit City Football Club (DCFC) have engaged in preliminary discussions with UFL representatives about potentially sharing DCFC’s upcoming stadium, according to confirmations from both sides.

Amid rising speculation, the Michigan Panthers, Detroit’s UFL team, may be eyeing a move to a different city by 2026. The high cost of hosting games at Ford Field, the NFL Lions’ home turf, has raised concerns about the team’s long-term viability at the venue. The Panthers have played at Ford Field for three seasons: one under the USFL banner and two following the merger that formed the UFL.

DCFC is currently developing AlumniFi Field, a 15,000-seat stadium in southwest Detroit, slated to open in 2027. Privately funded and expected to cost at least $150 million, the venue will replace Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck as DCFC’s home.

“We’ve had some informal conversations,” said DCFC co-owner Alex Wright, referring to talks with the UFL. “Our priority is building a top-tier soccer venue, but we’re open to hosting other events beyond our matches.”

Birmingham Stallions Safe, But Michigan’s Fate Uncertain

The Birmingham Stallions were also rumored to be on the way out of town, but co-owner Mike Repole confirmed their stability in August. Repole, who is part of the UFL ownership group that includes Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Fox, RedBird Capital Partners, and Dany Garcia, has also expressed interest in keeping the Panthers in Michigan.

Repole announced that the league will reveal its 2026 franchise lineup by October 8. “Choosing the right cities, with passionate fans and suitable venues, is critical to our long-term success,” he posted on X. “We’re conducting thorough research to ensure the league thrives not just in 2026, but for years to come.”

Panthers head coach Mike Nolan and general manager Steve Kazor have stated they’ve received no official updates regarding the team’s future. Following the 2025 season, the Panthers laid off most of their front-office and sales staff.

The UFL has committed to launching a team in Columbus, Ohio, and Repole has hinted at expanding to 10 teams by 2028. Whether Michigan’s team will relocate or remain is unclear until AlumniFi Field is completed.
